On Father’s Day, and every day, we know.

You’re an IT expert. The one who knows all the passwords for school, work, mortgage companies, doctor portals and cable companies. You keep them straight so everyone can do their classwork assignments, meet deadlines and balance the budget. If anyone loses a signal, you’re on the phone before they lose their minds.

With or without your morning cup of coffee.

Your teenage son drives responsibly because you woke up before dawn for weeks at a time. You taught him to park in empty lots and obey traffic laws on quiet streets. And yet you’re still awake when he’s out with friends or working a part-time job.

You’re often last in bed no matter how early you have to wake up in the morning. Even on Father’s Day.

You remember to ask your daughter what she thinks about a challenging situation first, before telling her your opinion. 

You don’t try to find solutions to every problem – you observe patiently as your kids do their own thing. Because you have confidence in them. You trust them. They are smart and capable, and you know this. 

Even if it takes them a few times, right?

You practiced that easy-going look for years and now it almost comes naturally to you. Almost. You use this look when coaches yell at your daughter on the basketball court. Or when a young man picks her up for a date. You practice that look when your son tells you he didn’t do well on a test he didn’t study for. It’s a look that comes in handy.

You changed diapers and warmed up bottles. You bought school supplies and helped transport science projects to classrooms on the far side of campus.

You rocked small children with sore throats and counseled teenagers with broken hearts.

You try not to worry about all the things that can go wrong when kids go on a hiking trip. Instead, you make sure they have all the supplies they’d ever need if they found themselves lost for a week and a half. It’s a full backpack but at least they’re safe.

You think. You pause. You weigh options.

You’ve been a chaperone at school dances, president of the PTA and assistant coach for softball, wrestling and swimming. Even if your degree is in graphic arts.

You like to relax and read and listen to them laugh. That’s what Father’s Day is all about.

You host cookouts and pool parties and tell everyone to make good choices.

You’re there to listen when they don’t. 

You sacrifice and pace and wash the cars. Check the grill to make sure it has a full tank before Friday rolls around and everyone looks to you for dinner. You sit at the head of the table and ask about school and friends and current events.

You’re looking forward to this summer.
