Is Summer Camp Tax Deductible in 2022?
If you’re like most parents, you’re always looking for ways to keep your kids entertained and learning during the summer – but you can’t spend an arm and a leg to do that. KidzToPros’ summer camps are a great solution! We offer affordable, tax-deductible camps both your kids and your wallet will love.
Summer camps can be affordable and priceless — all at the same time!
Can I Claim Summer Camp as Child Care?
Yes! Though a few restrictions apply, the government specifically designed the Child and Dependent Care Credit to save parents like you money on child care. This includes summer camp! For example, if you paid for a 2021 summer camp provider while you worked last year, that becomes a deductible expense when you file your taxes this year in 2022!
There’s more good news!
In previous years, you could only claim up to $3,000 for one child or $6,000 for two or more in child care expenses. Now you can claim up to $8,000 for one child or dependent and up to $16,000 for multiple children!
This one-time expansion also increases your maximum child care expense return rate to 50 percent (up from 35 percent). Now that’s a money-saver!
What does that mean?
You may get up to $4,000 back for one child and $8,000 back for care of two or more. That’s quite an increase from previous years!
Before this year, a child and dependent care credit was nonrefundable. This means that it could reduce your tax bill to zero but you would not receive a refund on anything extra. Now, the credit is fully refundable. This means that you will receive money for it even if you don’t owe taxes.
Please see a certified public accountant in your state for a full explanation of this tax credit and how it applies to your personal situation.
Are Summer Camps FSA Eligible?
Yes, summer camps are FSA eligible – depending on the type of FSA you have. According to the IRS, you can pay for a child to attend a summer camp/day camp as a work-related expense as long as you or your spouse is gainfully employed, a full-time student or actively job hunting.
Again, contact your personal accountant to see if summer day camp is an eligible expense under the rules of your FSA.
