Who’s ready for a nice autumn breeze and pumpkin spice everything? September isn’t just a new month, it’s the start of a whole new season. A new school year, too. Here are some fun holidays and activities you can celebrate with your family in September.

National holidays

These are days set aside for Americans specifically to come together in the name of patriots, workers and board games. How will you and your family celebrate?

Sept. 6: Labor Day – This is a day set aside to honor America’s workers and give them a day off.

Sept. 11: Patriot Day (9/11 Remembrance) – This year marks 20 years since the terrorist attack in New York City and the Pentagon. Click here for family-appropriate ways to commemorate the day with your children.

Sept. 17: Constitution Day and Citizenship Day – On this day back in 1787, our forefathers signed the U.S. Constitution. This is also a day set aside to honor those who choose to become American citizens.

National pride

Sept. 24: Native American Day – Most of us know what city and state we live in, but click here to find out what your land was originally called and who lived there first.

Sept. 25: National Public Lands Day – Every state has nationally protected lands that we can enjoy, especially as the weather gets cooler. Search for “public lands near me” and get out there!

Education-based days

Sept. 6: National Read a Book Day – Spend some quiet time today enjoying a good book. Take a picture and spread the word online.

Sept. 8: International Literacy Day – A reminder that worldwide literacy is important and achievable.

Days for food and drinks

Worldwide days

Sept. 22: Autumnal Equinox Day – This is the official start of Autumn. Get those fall vibes going with some good songs and apple cider. 

Sept. 22: World Car-Free Day – Leave that car in the garage and cut back on gas and environmental damage. If possible, today is a day to walk to work or school. Ride your bike. Or take public transportation.

Religious holidays

Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, begins the High Holy Days for Jewish people all over the world. Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, signals the end of this season. This year, those dates are September 6 – 16, 2021.

A whole month

Sometimes an issue is so important, it needs more than a day or week. Here are some campaigns that need your help to promote:
